P0500 — Vehicle speed sensor malfunction
The computer isn’t getting a plausible vehicle speed signal — speedometer, shifting, ABS/traction, and cruise control can all act up.
What it means in plain English
P0500 means the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal is missing or implausible. Depending on the vehicle, speed may come from a transmission sensor, ABS wheel-speed sensors, or a network message. Symptoms include an erratic or dead speedometer, harsh/late shifts, disabled cruise, or ABS lights. Wiring and tone rings matter as much as the sensor itself.
Common causes
- Failed vehicle speed sensor (or related ABS wheel-speed sensor feeding speed)
- Damaged wiring, connector, or tone ring/reluctor
- Transmission or ABS module signal issues
- Incorrect tire size / aftermarket changes confusing calculated speed (less common)
What you can safely check
- Note whether the speedometer drops to zero while moving, and if ABS/traction lights are also on.
- Check for recent transmission, hub, or ABS work that disturbed connectors.
- Don’t ignore limp-mode or harsh shifting — get it diagnosed.

A reusable Bluetooth OBD-II scanner lets you read the code and freeze-frame data before authorizing “mystery” diagnostics. One option: BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBD-II scan tool (BlueDriver/Levanta affiliate). Any capable OBD-II reader is fine — this is not required to use Fair Auto Shops.
When to go to a shop
Ask which speed source your vehicle uses (VSS vs ABS) and for signal verification. Costs vary widely by sensor location — we don’t invent a national average here when a RepairPal range isn’t in our verified set. Get a written diagnostic plan before parts.
Typical related repair costs
Speed-sensor replacement cost depends on whether the sensor is external on the transmission, integrated, or an ABS ring/hub job. Request a line-item estimate after the shop identifies the failed signal source.
Questions to ask before you authorize work
Use questions before you authorize a repair and how to read a repair estimate. Watch for patterns in spotting upselling.

FAQ
Can I drive with P0500?
If the transmission shifts oddly, ABS is involved, or the speedometer is dead, drive gently and schedule diagnosis — speed data affects more than the gauge.
Will P0500 fail emissions?
It can keep monitors incomplete or illuminate the check-engine light, which fails many inspection programs. Fix and complete drive cycles before the test.
