P0441 — EVAP incorrect purge flow
The PCM expected a certain purge flow from the charcoal canister and didn’t see it — often a stuck purge valve or blocked path.
What it means in plain English
P0441 means evaporative purge flow was incorrect (too much, too little, or not as commanded). A purge valve stuck open can cause rough idle and rich smells; stuck closed prevents canister emptying. Vacuum lines and PCM command issues also appear. Compare with vent/flow codes like P0446.
Common causes
- Purge valve (solenoid) stuck open or closed
- Blocked or cracked purge hose
- Faulty vent path affecting the monitor
- Wiring/control issues to the purge solenoid
What you can safely check
- Listen/feel for obvious disconnected EVAP hoses in the engine bay if accessible.
- Note idle quality right after refueling — a stuck-open purge can show up then.
- Avoid EVAP “in a bottle” as the only plan.

A reusable Bluetooth OBD-II scanner lets you read the code and freeze-frame data before authorizing “mystery” diagnostics. One option: BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBD-II scan tool (BlueDriver/Levanta affiliate). Any capable OBD-II reader is fine — this is not required to use Fair Auto Shops.
When to go to a shop
Ask for purge-valve command testing and smoke/flow verification. Related range: purge valve replacement. Don’t authorize a canister first without evidence.
Typical related repair costs (U.S. national averages)
These are related repairs shops may find after diagnosis — not a guaranteed bill for every P0441. Ranges exclude taxes, fees, diagnostics, and your location.
- $210–$251 national average for purge valve replacement (RepairPal; estimates last updated September 3, 2026; excludes taxes/fees and location; source). Labor $65–$95; parts $146–$156.
If the valve is accessible, parts+labor often land near the purge-valve national average; buried valves or harness repairs change the bill.

FAQ
Can a bad gas cap cause P0441?
Less often than leak codes (P0442/P0455/P0456). P0441 is more about purge flow performance — but shops still rule out basic EVAP integrity.
Is it safe to drive with P0441?
Usually yes if drivability is normal. If idle is rough or you smell fuel vapors strongly, get it checked sooner.
