P0121 — Throttle/pedal position sensor range/performance

The throttle position sensor (TPS) or accelerator pedal position sensor signal is out of the expected range — idle, throttle response, and limp mode are common symptoms.

What it means in plain English

P0121 indicates a throttle/pedal position sensor range or performance problem. On cable-throttle cars this is often the TPS on the throttle body; on drive-by-wire cars it may involve throttle-body sensors, pedal sensors, or correlation between them. Carboned throttle plates, failing sensors, and wiring issues are frequent. Don’t confuse it with thermostat code P0128.

A reusable Bluetooth OBD-II scanner lets you read the code and freeze-frame data before authorizing “mystery” diagnostics. One option: BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBD-II scan tool (BlueDriver/Levanta affiliate). Any capable OBD-II reader is fine — this is not required to use Fair Auto Shops.

When to go to a shop

Request live TPS/APP correlation data before authorizing a throttle body. Electronic throttle assemblies can be pricey — ask whether cleaning, a sensor, or a full TB is justified. Pair with authorize-repair questions.

Typical related repair costs

Throttle-body or pedal-sensor jobs aren’t in our cited RepairPal averages yet. Require a written estimate after live-data diagnosis; cleaning (when appropriate) is far cheaper than a full electronic throttle assembly.

Questions to ask before you authorize work

Use questions before you authorize a repair and how to read a repair estimate. Watch for patterns in spotting upselling.

FAQ

Is P0121 dangerous?

Limp mode and sudden reduced power can be unsafe in traffic. If the vehicle enters reduced power, pull over when safe and arrange diagnosis — don’t keep forcing the pedal.

Will a throttle cleaning fix P0121?

Sometimes when carbon skews airflow vs indicated angle — not when the sensor or wiring has failed. Ask the shop what data justified cleaning vs parts.
