P0010 — Camshaft position actuator circuit (Bank 1)
The variable valve timing (VVT) actuator/solenoid circuit on bank 1 isn’t responding correctly — oil condition and the control solenoid are frequent culprits.
What it means in plain English
P0010 points to a camshaft position actuator (VVT) circuit problem on bank 1 — open/short or performance of the oil-control solenoid circuit. Related mechanical codes like P0011 (over-advanced cam) overlap in symptoms but aren’t identical. Dirty oil, wrong viscosity, a failed VVT solenoid, or wiring faults are common before “timing chain” talk.
Common causes
- Faulty VVT oil-control solenoid / actuator
- Low, dirty, or incorrect-viscosity engine oil
- Wiring or connector faults on the solenoid circuit
- Timing chain/phaser mechanical issues (less first-line than oil/solenoid)
What you can safely check
- Verify oil level and when it was last changed — sludge kills VVT systems.
- Use the oil grade the manufacturer specifies.
- Note rattles on cold start (possible chain/phaser concern) vs a quiet engine with only a circuit code.

A reusable Bluetooth OBD-II scanner lets you read the code and freeze-frame data before authorizing “mystery” diagnostics. One option: BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBD-II scan tool (BlueDriver/Levanta affiliate). Any capable OBD-II reader is fine — this is not required to use Fair Auto Shops.
When to go to a shop
Request solenoid circuit tests and oil-condition assessment before authorizing phasers or chains. Cam sensor replacement alone rarely fixes a P0010 circuit fault — see cam sensor costs only if diagnosis points there. Ask for line-item labor on any timing work — read the estimate.
Typical related repair costs
VVT solenoid replacement costs vary by engine and aren’t in our cited RepairPal set yet — ask for a written parts+labor quote after circuit testing. Related sensor work, if needed, is covered in the camshaft position sensor guide.

FAQ
Will an oil change fix P0010?
Sometimes if varnish/sludge limited solenoid movement — not if the solenoid or wiring has failed. Don’t keep clearing the code without checking oil history and circuit tests.
Is P0010 an emergency?
If the engine runs normally, schedule diagnosis soon. If you have loud cold-start rattle, misfire, or metal in oil, stop and tow — mechanical timing damage is possible.
