About Fair Auto Shops

National brand · CC Pearce / Atlas · Last updated Oct 25, 2026 (America/Los_Angeles) · Live at fairautoshops.com

Fair Auto Shops is a city-by-city directory of auto shops that locals recommend specifically for honesty — fair pricing, written estimates, no scare-upsell — not for who paid for a badge. The product is national; each metro is researched and published on its own evidence. Greater Los Angeles was the first directory; New York City and Chicago use the same vetting rules.

City-by-city expansion model

  1. Pick a metro (major U.S. city or clearly bounded metro area).
  2. Research public recommendation threads (Reddit metro + neighborhood subs; occasional named X posts) for honesty / fair-dealing signals.
  3. Vet with the same criteria as LA (prefer 2+ independent mentions; verify addresses from public listings; omit invented phones/ratings).
  4. Publish a city page (e.g. /la, /nyc, /chicago) with sources and last-seen dates — never placeholder shops.
  5. Repeat across major U.S. cities. Roadmap metros on the home page are labels only until research ships.

LA proved the template; NYC and Chicago shipped next on the same evidence bar. Expansion does not mean scraping national review sites into fake “top 10” lists.

Methodology (per city)

  1. Search public recommendation threads for that metro.
  2. Collect shops named for honesty / fair dealing, with reason + URL.
  3. Prefer shops with 2+ independent mentions across threads or years.
  4. Confirm a plausible public business listing (address). Phones only when found publicly; otherwise TBD.
  5. Exclude mega-chains unless the honesty signal is unusually strong.
  6. Publish with a short “why listed,” source links, and last-seen evidence date.
No fake reviews pledge. We do not invent star ratings, fabricate testimonials, or publish paid “featured” shops. We do not scrape review scores into fake consensus. If we cannot find public evidence in a city, that city’s page waits — we do not pad it.
